Local-first is a practical choice.

Not every useful interaction needs a distant server in the middle.

Two devices in the same room already share a network. When the job is moving a file, opening storage or monitoring a camera, the direct route is often the sensible one.

Less machinery between you and the job

A local connection can mean no mandatory account, no upload-then-download loop and no cloud copy of the thing you were trying to move across a desk. It can also keep working when the internet is slow or unavailable.

That idea runs through PhoneDrop, PhoneNAS, MindGallery and PhoneMulticam. They are different tools, but they start with the same question: what can the devices do together before adding another service?

Local does not mean automatic

Networks still need care. Pairing should be visible. Permissions should be understandable. A beta should say it is a beta. Local-first is not a magic security sticker—it is a design constraint that removes unnecessary routes and makes the remaining ones easier to see.

Use the shortest trustworthy path that does the job.

Sometimes a store, a remote helper or an online service is still the right answer. The point is to earn that extra layer, not assume it.
