Old devices, new jobs.

A spare phone is not just a small rectangle waiting for recycling day.

It has flash storage, cameras, Wi-Fi, a screen, a battery and years of industrial engineering packed inside. The most interesting question is often not what new hardware to buy, but what useful job this hardware can do now.

Start with what is already good

PhoneNAS turns selected storage into familiar network shares. PhoneMulticam treats nearby phones as cameras in a small coordinated setup. PhoneDrop connects devices without making the file take a cloud detour.

None of those ideas require pretending an old phone is a data-centre server or a cinema camera. A useful second life comes from respecting the limits: heat, battery health, Android background rules, camera differences and the quality of the local network.

The middle ground

There is room between a disposable gadget and a grand hardware platform. Small software can make existing devices useful today, while experiments with embedded systems and purpose-built hardware continue quietly until they are ready to show.

Reuse is most convincing when the result is genuinely useful.

That is the direction of the lab: practical first, expandable later.
