- Runs on Android 8.0 and newer.
- Shares a folder selected through Android’s system storage picker.
- Implements an SMB 2.1 server with username-and-password authentication.
- Supports browsing, reading, creating and writing files in the selected folder.
- Advertises the service on the local network for compatible clients.
- Does not require root or a cloud account.
PhoneNAS is still being tested. Compatibility, rename/delete behavior and real-device performance are not yet published as release claims.
Getting started
- Choose a folder to share.
- Set an SMB username and password.
- Start the PhoneNAS server.
- Connect from a compatible SMB client on the same local network.
FAQ
Does PhoneNAS require root?
No. The current build uses Android’s standard storage access framework.
Does it work with macOS Finder?
Finder interoperability is a development target and has been exercised during implementation, but final device and macOS compatibility testing is still pending.
Can it share an SD card?
It can share a folder offered by Android’s system storage picker. Availability depends on the device and storage provider.
Does it require cloud storage or internet?
No cloud service is required for the local SMB server. The devices must share a local network.
How fast is PhoneNAS?
Performance depends on the phone, storage, Wi‑Fi and client. No public speed claim will be made until repeatable measurements are complete.
